"It's a Date" Book and our January Date

As I mentioned before, I gave Greg a date book for Christmas that was a compilation of 12 pre-planned dates, one for each month in the upcoming year.

It took about 3 days to create and these were the supplies I used.

How I made it:

I cut 4 inches off the ends of 13 brown kraft envelopes and inked the edges to keep it masculine.
I then punched 2 holes in the cut ends and used a 7 gypsies elastic band to bind the envelopes together.
I added Making Memories rub on letters for the title.
I used a 7 Gypsies mini 'door handle' on the first envelope page and a small little charm tied to the elastic band with waxy flax. Inside this cover page was a card with a note explaining the purpose of the book.
Then I added a monthly sticker to each envelope page and a small 'clue' in the form of a silver word plate on the facing page. Inside each months envelope page is a card that explains our monthly date.
The most time consuming part of the entire project was thinking of 12 dates, taking into consideration the month, special occassions and/or local events. Here's a peek at the cards - I had to make sure I didn't give anything away in this picture since these are all top secret! (The card in the bottom right hand corner that reads "Gift of Love" is the explanation card that was inside the first envelope page.) I printed the cards and SEALED them in their respective envelope pages, waiting to be opened on the first day of the month, when we will look at our calendar and schedule our date unless it's a local event that already has a set date.

Today, we went on our date for January. As you can see from above, we went for a drive to the lake in the ZO6 and were we ever surprised at what we stumbled upon!

I knew Greg would enjoy the winding curves and hills of the roads to Canyon Lake but when we turned into the parking and dock area, we found about 10 Audi R8's and another ZO6. I told Greg to park the car, we were joining the car show! He was hesitant at first but I convinced him and he pulled in by the other ZO6.

Even though I've watched my share of Top Gear, I fail to retain what I learn. So I asked Greg what was so special about the all those Audi's and he said the R8's are about $180K - each. In short, we were looking at about a million dollars worth in cars. Can you say crazy?

It was a totally fun date, though I can't take credit for the extra cool turn that it took! Speaking of cool....he totally is and I love him for it. :)

Simplifying the Season

In November, I realized I would need to simplify our upcoming holiday season. So I took inventory of everything coming down the pike between school performances, church duties, work responsibilities, chores at home, etc. etc. and deliberately started letting things go!

First and noticeably from my last post date, I neglected the blog - there was simply no extra time to do it, so I just didn't.

Second, I didn't have the time or budget to create a Christmas letter so I minimized it to the photo card and within minutes, I was done! Keeping conservative, I only printed 50 copies in lieu of sending out a 100 as I've done in prior years.

Third, Christmas gifts. I am the primary person to ~~worry~~ deal with these details each year and typically, it's my biggest season stresser. So this year, I chose simple and minimal to free myself from the stress! For those who treated us to a special occasion such as dinner or a party, I gave fresh flower arrangements.

For out of town relatives, I gave our family calendar.

For Nathan, I found something I knew he would love. What tickled me though, was a couple of weeks before Christmas when Nathan built an aircraft carrier out of legos and left it on the floor just inches from the very large air craft carrier wrapped up under the Christmas tree!

As I suspected, he loved it. =)

For Greg, I didn't spend alot (which makes him happy) but I did put a lot of thought into it. I made a 'Date' book with 12 months of top secret pre-planned dates. He doesn't handle surprises very well though, so this was a little risky.

During the mad dash to Texas, we guarded our time and kept our activities to a minimum. We didn't visit with friends but just spent our short time with relatives.

Our more exciting table talk though was about our reality show relatives, whose show "Texas Multi Mamas" would air on WE Tv, 3 days after Christmas. This plug's for you Ryan and Teryn! ;)

This just happens to be a new favorite of Greg & Nathan.

Christmas at this age is such a special time, I think it's because it's before any 'expectations' are developed.

Before I knew it, we were in the car again driving back to Arizona.

New Year's Day was on a Sunday. Both Greg and I were scheduled to serve at church so we canceled our New Year's Day brunch. Though, I enjoy ringing in the new year with friends - it was a welcomed break!

As I suspected it would, the holiday season came and went in a flash. Would I liked to have done more or even given more? Of course. But it wasn't realistic so I had to let go of some self imposed expectations in order to simplify the season and I'm glad I did because I still have some sanity about me!

Lastly, it seems every Christmas there is either a video or a picture in which I look absolutely ridiculous. Since I'm a good sport and love a good laugh, it's become a little tradition to share here so we can all have a good laugh together - cause I'm fun like that. ;) So here it is. This Christmas' picture where I look absolutely ridiculous!

Bwahaaaa!! So when I showed this picture to Greg, he said I look like this ALL the time.
Wait.
Whaaat? Really?
If this is true, shame on all of you for not telling me!! :)

It's a Train Date

This weekend I promised Nathan a visit to a train park, new to us. It had been quite a while since he and I hung out doing the train thing and since Greg had a softball tournament, the timing worked out well.
No big thing, just us doing our thing!

Was he excited? I don't know, what do you think?

As for me. I was cold. Therefore, it matters not how ridiculous I look, what matters is that I was trying to stay warm.

Thanksgiving Table Trot!

We hosted Thanksgiving this year, our guests were the Nortons and Haniotes. We had 15 adults and 5 kids. Everyone brought a dish which simplified the entire process and kept my to-do list very minimum. I loved doing it this way, it gave me the time I needed to clean the house and make other preparations.

This was the first time I used table place cards, such a great idea! I also made some napkin rings with some online Thanksgiving printables found here.

I established the arrival time for 12:30, pretty sure it would take an additional hour to pull everyone's dishes together, carve turkey, etc. I totally called it, we sat down to eat about 1:30. We finally trotted to the table and had a great Thanksgiving meal, thanks to all of our guests!

Dining Room Makeover Completed!

We finished the Dining Room. We have slowly added to this room with extra paint, random pictures, whatever leftover bits and pieces we could find but the room began to resemble a scrap yard and the longer it looked this way the more it bothered me. Here's what I was dealing with when I finally snapped and couldn't take it anymore.

We had to give this room an extreme makeover! First, we purchased this amazing table from Craig's List, found at just the right time for just the right price!

Then we needed to deal with the brown mammoth of a wall. I decided to stencil the wall because a friend was selling a paint stencil at her garage sale and she said stenciling was 'easy and fun to do'.
I'm still wondering why she lied to me. It wasn't easy. Nor was it fun. But it was worth it, take a look:

Then I grouped together the framed pictures (Walmart $6-12) and added drapes to the windows (Savers $8)

I traded out the darker shelves for lighter ones and used my address subway art as a focal point for the room. (Small shelf $3, Coffee Canister $2, Clock $2 - Savers. Flower Tin $1 - Goodwill. Large shelf $12 (was black, painted it white) - Ross. Coffee Cups/Saucers - repurposed!). I really love this little space!

I used a wooden crate as a shelf next to the large mirror to balance out the dark wood accents. (Crate $3, Glass Lantern $6 - Garage Sales Hat & Frames, repurposed!)

Added more elements in white to balance out the massive sea of brown. That little accent table was actually Free on Craig's List - believe it! It was brown, I repainted it white and replaced the drawer handles.

The antique phone looks much better on the wall with the white stenciling and the little table below (Goodwill) received a fresh coat of paint!

So much happier with this room now and couldn't have done any of this without 'the man' Greg by my side, he rocks!

Our October 31st

This year we met up with folks in our neighborhood who are subsequently in our homegroup and whose children also go to Nathan's school. It's like the six degrees from Kevin Bacon thing! :)

We looked like a good size group - a force to be reckoned with!

Nathan dressed up as an Air Force Stealth Pilot (with facial hair) and once he had his costume on he asked me what was his mission was supposed to be. 'Get candy' what else?

I hadn't planned to dress up but I ran across this headband at a friends garage sale, remembered I had a shirt that matched the bow and before I knew it I was Minnie Mouse! I even had the white gloves but I forgot them at the house, darnit. This is Nathan's salute!

It took Nathan a while to warm up to Trick or Treating, staying close to me, but after several houses he ran ahead with his friends and classmates.

Each of these little girls are in Nathan's class at school (except the older girl in the middle). Look at that Strawberry Shortcake, is she not the cutest little thing you've ever seen?!!

I hate that this picture is blurry but Nathan's penciled-in mustache and his expression makes him look like a french painter, hahaha!

Today we visited the USS Midway Naval Aviation Museum. We spent about 4 hours aboard this super cool aircraft carrier.

As with many things, the camera just could not capture how monstrous this ship is, but this was my attempt to get that ginormous ship in one frame, just barely made it!

We explored the 'flight' deck where the aircraft land and take off while at sea. Simply amazing.

Don't mess with me, I'm holding a missile, hahaha!

There were lots of hands on exhibits where Greg and Nathan were able to climb aboard aircraft.

This was odd. American Idol auditions were taking place on board so we saw a few interesting characters, such as the Fruit of the Loom wannabes seen here.

The Hangar deck had simulators and a number of climb aboard cockpits which Nathan throughly enjoyed.

Greg in an emergency ejection seat. No comment about this look that he continued to do in all my pictures.

We probably spent most of our time on the Mess deck which is basically 'a city on sea' including a jail, post office, laundry, barber shop and so much more as well as war rooms, engine rooms, etc, etc.

There was also a gift shop. {David, we had to take a picture of your jacket which looks exactly the same! By the way, it's selling for $70!}

Nailed it! Easy Teacher Gift

This teacher gift was super easy to create and required very few supplies; I used a small plastic tumbler for the container, colored map pencils, hot glue, and something for a bow. That's it!

Since my tumbler was fluted at the top, the colored pencils needed to be slightly spaced towards the top. I didn't realize this until after I tried to glue the pencils side by side without spacing, so I had to remove those and start over (the reason for the dried up glue on the side of my tumbler in this picture).

The Issue:

Nathan's projects taped on the wall wasn't aesthetically appealing. To state it plainly, it looked like a constant mess.

The Ideas:

These were the Pinterest ideas which inspired me to finally do something about the mess.

The Improvement:

Step 1 -

I took an existing sign hanging up and set about to repurpose it. I removed the existing lettering and started with a blank slate.

Step 2 -

I created the artwork I wanted to use and had it cut in vinyl, super easy to apply as seen here.

Wa-la and I love it!

Step 3 -

Found these binder clips that tied in perfectly with the bar code design and applied them with hot glue.

Step 4 -

Done, I hung this on the wall and we now have a dedicated place for Nathan's projects...and his handprints!

Growing Up

Something significant happened this morning that left me feeling completely ambivalent. Every school morning, Nathan and I would spend the last several minutes before school either talking or playing until the whistle. I always hung out with Nathan, providing him that extra measure of comfort while he 'warmed up' to the day ahead.

This morning, we walked into the common area at school and Nathan, normally reserved and shy, spotted a friend. "Hey Christian!" Nathan walked up to Christian, said something and then they walked off together toward the playground - never looked back!

I was shocked then I remembered I was holding my camera so I quickly shot this picture of Nathan and Christian walking away together.

I've been purposefully seeking opportunities for Nathan to play with kids his age, hoping to decrease his dependence on me and help him socialize. This was exactly what I had been preparing Nathan for and suddenly it happened but I was completely conflicted in that moment. I was proud of him, he had a friend that he reached out to but I was also sad because suddenly... he didn't need me, he was growing up.

I literally didn't know what to do with myself. So I sat down by the Kidergarten teacher and told her what happened. She laughed and said, "You don't whether to be happy or sad do you?" With three kids of her own she totally understood. I suspect every mom comes to this pivotal point with her children and I'm no different.

The whistle blew and it was time to say the Pledge which was why I had my camera. I made a video of the school saying the Pledge of Allegiance. Again, Nathan always wanted me by his side during this time and suddenly he was standing with his class, on his own, saying the pledge, so grown up. *love*

And that was it, a significant - bittersweet moment, just like that.

Pinterest and Black Tar Heroin

Pinterest.

How do you pronounce it?
I have no idea. I've googled how to pronounce it and everyone says it differently. I've resorted to saying "I found something on Pin...P-In...on the internet."

What is it?
My friend Courtney described it this way on her blog "There are so many great ideas and creative inspirations there, but it is also a time sucking vortex of epic proportions."

Another blogger, Brittaney Gibbons wrote an article titled "Why Pinterest is Like Black Tar Heroin."

From my personal experience...both are accurate. Think 'bulletin board and tacks'. Pinterest is the same idea but happens online. It is a virtual bulletin board for everything I see online. I can create as many bulletin boards as I want - categorizing those images and url's. Uh-hum, that's a dream come true for this OCD girl!

Furthermore, you can 'follow' other peoples boards that you find interesting. Before you know it, another door to a big virtual world has opened before you! For example, the deliciously sarcastic signs I've posted to Facebook? Found on Pinterest.

I Heart Pinetop, AZ!

We just returned from Pinetop, Arizona and I gotta say, I LOVE it there for the following reasons:

Lower temperatures (high 80's, low 60's!) - a welcome break from the valley heat waves!
Visually stunning - tall, green pine trees everywhere, just part of the natural landscaping!
Restaurants - there is no lack of food for Greg to enjoy to his hearts content!
Shopping - Thrifting /antiquing shops all over the town which I heart big time!
Cabin rental - We found a very affordable and super accommodating cabin, love it!

I'm ready to move to Pinetop but it will be tough to get Greg on board. He noticed that people move at a s-l-o-w-e-r pace in Pinetop. I'm totally ok with that - sign me up!

This is a picture of the neighborhood our cabin was in, Sara is helping Nathan with his bike in the bottom left corner. I heart this neighborhood!

We visit Rainbow Lake which was about 15 mins from where we stayed.

We also went hiking on Springs Trail No 633, recently featured in Phoenix magazine as one of Arizona's Best Hikes. The article included a kid rating based on the probability of a mid-hike kiddie meltdown, this hike was rated kid-friendly, so Nathan hiked on his own for the first time! He did get tired toward the end and Greg shouldered him the last 1/4 of the hike but for his first hike, he walked a long time and did a great job!

We also recognized the Auger's 17th year wedding anniversary - gooo Augers...and Red Sox too!

You know you've had a good vacation when the kids pass out on the way home...hahaha!

Lovely place, lovely time, can't wait to return...or move! :)

Diamondbacks Family Night

This Friday night, we enjoyed a Diamondbacks family night, along with folks from FCA (Nathan's school). There was a great fireworks show after the game followed by a Toby Mac concert. It was such fun to spend time with other FCA parents and for Nathan to hang out with classmates outside of school.

Air Conditioning Mandatory.

Summer in Arizona does not mean running around outside. Quite the opposite, Summer is the season we run around inside, where air conditioning is available. Sometimes we have to be creative like the Saturday Nathan and I spent an afternoon at...The Mall.

There's a Train at The Mall.
Me: Nathan, we're only going to ride the Train once because it costs dollars. We'll ride something free as much as you want. Do you understand?
Nathan: Yes, I want to ride in the coal car. No, I want to ride in the green car.

Me: Nathan, you can sit and pretend but I don't have change (I did) for these. We can ride something free as much as you want.
Nathan: Ok, I'm get on ice cream truck and pretend I got you ice cream.

Nathan: YES, yes, I wanna push the button! (has finger hovering over the 1 button, waiting for family of 4 to finish loading)
Oblivious Father: (leans over 4 yr old with finger hovering over 1 button and pushes 1 button himself)
Nathan: (offended) Hey! (disappointed, face crumples, crying ensues)
Understanding Mother: That little boy was going to push the button.
Oblivious Father: Oh I'm sooo sorry, I didn't realize it, I didn't know.
Me: Nathan, it's o.k., we can ride the elevator again (it's free) you can push the button next time....come on, let's go ride an escalator.

What to do with all your kids schoolwork?

Give it to the grandparents. That's what I do! I realize this may not be a solution for everyone. I have a 4 year old preschooler, who creates a massive amount of paper projects between church and school. Since I'm a self-prescribed 'organized-hoarder' I had to figure out a way to deal with all of Nathan's schoolwork and projects.

A while ago, I sorted through a bucket of every project I had saved. I pulled out what I wanted to personally save as keepsakes, then I sorted out what would go to the grandparents.

I labeled baskets with tags for each set of grandparents. (I'm in love with this font, strangely named 'Rage' - if you also like it, you can find it for free at Kevin and Amanda's blog.)

I sort through Nathan's schoolwork and projects as I collect it. I set aside what I want to keep and toss what I think the grandparents would like into their respective baskets.

I also keep a handful of large envelopes in the baskets and the baskets literally sit on top of my desk credenza. This makes it very convenient to pull a basket down, grab an envelope and gather some items together, address and send off!

This works well for out of state grandparents (like ours) who don't have the opportunity to interact with their grandchildren in person much. I feel like it's just a small way to include them in the life of their grandchild. I also throw less away, total win for me!

For grandparents who are not out of state, this could still be a useful way to share all those paper projects, Get the kids involved in putting together a grandparent packet. Mail it or hand deliver, either way is fun. If grandkids saw some of their work displayed on Nana's or Papa's fridge, they just might feel extra proud!

My Garden Center

For many folks, having a dedicated space for a personal hobby is a luxury. For some, a sewing room. For others, a man cave or garage. For many years, having a craft room was that special space for me. However, since my transition from traditional to digital scrapbooking in the last few years, I use that space less and less.

Now, I've always enjoyed flower and container gardening but it's been a long time since I've had a dedicated place to store my tools or repot a plant. Our first house actually had a small green room which I loved but that was long ago. In our current house, storage always seems to be an issue and my gardening tools or supplies were always in a basket here or a bucket there and I would literally squat on the ground to repot a plant. So I made myself a garden center and the best part is, it only cost $10.00. :)

I found this Baker's Rack on Craig's List for $10.00 - SCORE! I gathered all my scattered things and now everything is organized. You know how I love me some order!

School is Back in Session

Monday was the first day of school for Nathan.

I asked if Sir Grouch-A-Lot wanted to take my picture instead - he did. I set the example and smiled big.

He perked up and smiled for this picture.

Then the whistle blew and it was time for Sir Grouch-A-Lot to line up with his class.

And that was that.
Nathan went to school.
And I went to Dunkin Donuts.

Out with the Old, In with the New!

The improvement train at our homestead is still chugging along, 2 small improvements that just make me happy. :o)

The kitchen faucet that came with this house was the most basic $15 faucet found at Lowes. I hated it and hate is not to strong a word in this case.

Greg picked out and installed our new faucet. I love it and love is an adequate description of my feelings for this new faucet!

My OCD kicked into high gear on this next improvement. One weekend, hangers were on sale at Target, 10 for $1 so I bought 3 sets. The humor in this improvement is that I don't think the mis-matched hangers bothered me until I got all matching hangers, hahaha! But now - ahh, it feels so nice to have order cause I love me some order!

Nathan has been taking swim lessons twice a week at a recently opened Aqua Tots.
When I ask if Nathan is excited about his swim lesson, he grimaces and says he doesn't want to go.
When I ask if Nathan has any fun at his swim lessons, he scowls and says no.
When I ask if Nathan wants to go to his swim lesson, he adamantly says no way.

Yeah, I can see your not having one iota of fun. You know what you little stinker? You can't fool me!

Can't Move? Improve!

This was the tagline in a recent advertisement that gave me a chuckle. The housing situation across the country is pretty dire as market values continue to plummet. While we wait for the market to bounce back, we have embraced making home improvements.

I recently posted about the completed tile throughout the house. Ironically, during the tile installation, we overhauled our laundry room. Unfortunately, I remember to take 'Before' pictures after I empty out a space, so it's not a good depiction of what the set up was like prior to but trust me it was pitiful!

Here is the Laundry room today. Never mind the awesome 80's almond colored dryer, that was given to us by Greg's grandparents. I have no idea how old it is but it's like the Energizer Bunny, it just keeps on going and going!

This is where we hang our hats (lol), post invitations, and place our stuff when we get home.

Just some colorful touches to make the space fun.

Some storage bins and an extra shelf for laundry baskets. Oh and a chandelier. Hahaha!

Bonus picture of my OCDness. I love clear bins with labels. When I look in this cabinet, it totally makes me happy!

Shortly after the tile installation was complete, I decided to make a space for Nathan's toys downstairs. At the time, we had a custom made shelf that Greg built to house 8 canvas 12x12 bins in our family space where we stuffed all of Nathan's toys. Whenever Nathan played with his toys it was in the direct path to the bathroom - completely inconvenient and a total mess.

So I took all of this storage, out of this closet:

And made this closet, a toy space:

I added this sheet as a curtain to hide the shelf and vacuum accessories.

And much to my delight, Nathan's toys are contained and out of the way!

Our completed projects are so timely considering the milestone we will soon recognize...any guesses what that might be? Anyone?

Drop Ins Welcome

Last week, we had the surprise of a unscheduled-unplanned-unbeknownst to me visit from my dad. While I know this is just how my dad rolls, as in flying by the seat of his pants, it just catches me off guard when I get that call that says he's dropping in and "See you in 2 hours."

It had been 3 years since our last visit, so it was certainly due time. As a result, Nathan needed time to warm up to his Grandpa again. However, Grandpa had some tricks up his sleeve.

Trick #1 - Playtime. Once you sit on the floor to actually play and 'spend time' with Nathan - you're IN.

Trick #2 - Donuts. Give this kid something sweet to eat and suddenly your best buddies. Reminds me of another Hull I know.

Trick #3 - Trains. Grandpa bought Nathan some more track pieces and a new train. Pretty much sealed the deal, Nathan's friendship can be so easily bought it's not even funny.

We had a great visit with my dad. Not sure when we'll see him again, as I understand it, he's going on tour this fall.

Monsoon Season Edumacation

As I listen to the rolling thunder and distant crackling of lightening, I'm a little worried about Greg because he's at a softball game...'out there'. It's 'Monsoon Season' in Arizona. I drove home just as the storm started to roll in - heavy wind gusts kicking up dust so thick I could barely see the road. As I sit in the quiet of our house, I can hear the wind whipping around our house, wreaking havoc in yards as outdoor objects fly aimlessly around.

You may not live in an area where you experience Monsoon Season so here's a little brush up on what it is and what it looks like.

An explanation I found online:

During the monsoon, or summer thunderstorm season, Arizona experiences more severe weather than many other states. On rare occasion, a severe storm may spawn a tornado. More often, high winds, dust and severe downpours resulting in flash floods are common monsoon occurrences.

Trade out for Tile Completed

The DIY (do it yourself) house project replacing the linoleum flooring for ceramic tile throughout the house is finally complete! Insert happy celebration right here...wait for it...here it is....Whoohooo!! Yippee!! WOOT-WOOT!!! Yay!!! Loud NOISES!!

Wow. It is so much nicer and perhaps it's just a mental issue for me but it just 'feels' cleaner to me. That nasty linoleum flooring always felt d-i-r-t-y. The house feels sanitary now and I just love that feeling.

I especially love how Sarah captured the little nuances of Greg's demeanor while he's playing, which only I may be aware of after watching him play all these years. Catching up with Coupons

I recently took an involuntary hiatus from my life due to a work project that took 563 hours of my time. As a result, a number of personal priorities were left unattended....

At times, it was my child who watched countless hours of cartoons (insert mom-guilt) while I pecked away at my computer, working late into the night again. Other times, it was my house - unkept, cluttered, a total wreck of a home (exaggeration? Not at all.)

And the majority of the time, I neglected clipping coupons. Realistically, I didn't have time to shop the store sales anyways. There were a couple of times I had to shop for basic necessities but there was no time for coupons or checking sales. I recall holding a box of Minute Rice for $4.99 - not on sale and no coupon. I wanted to throw up. I can no longer pay full price for items without feeling completely sick to my stomach. And that's when I realized...this lifestyle has become an addiction. Literally.

Now I'm catching up, tonight I clipped my coupons. Whew. Relief. Now I can shop with a clear conscious. Grocery stores, get my freebies ready, here I come!

Well....it means I can have my life back! I can sit on the couch with Greg at night again. I can play with Nathan. Cook quality dinners again. I can clip my coupons & grocery shop like I used to, I can scrapbook, I can work on our yard, I can work on home projects, I can take Nathan to the library....

Family Ties

While in Austin, I made it a priority to visit my Aunt & Uncle who helped raise me. I lived in this house with them when I was 5 and again when I was 8. I once read something that said "family is not who you are born to but who understands you' or something like that. My Aunt & Uncle would fall into that category; they understand me because they understand the history that shaped who I am.

My Aunt is like a second mom; she bought me clothes, cooked dinner, took care of me when I was throwing up spaghetti in her upstairs bedroom. To this day, I'll use my left foot to brake while driving because I always wanted to mimic her when I drove. My cousin, also pictured, was an equally integral part of my history because she became a big sister to me at a time that I needed one.

My Uncle pictured here was always a steady and consistent presence. I love hearing him talk, I'm not sure why but the sound of his smooth voice is just comforting to me.

Something I really valued at their house while growing up was a portrait of my Aunt and all her siblings which hung in the living room. Perhaps my affinity for the 1950's era stems from the countless time I would spend looking at this portrait! Here we are looking at the picture on the kitchen table while I was grilling my Aunt on who was who and how old they were at the time (1955).

These are all my Aunt's and I lived with almost all of them at one point or another while growing up!

Visiting my Aunt and Uncle was great but they were very quick to remind me that the last time they saw me was 11 years ago when Greg and I got married - Ouch!! I really need to do a better job at staying in touch....

Hulls vs. Food

There was a time when Greg and I watched Man vs. Food on the Travel channel pretty regularly. In one of those shows, two Texas restaurants were featured and Greg promised that we would visit those two places whenever the opportunity arose. True to his promise, we did just that.

First - The Salt Lick Bar-B-Que. What makes it unique? They sear the meat and then move it away from the hottest part of the fire to cook slowly. They cook it over an open fire fed by live oak wood. The open fire pit is literally inside the cooking area of the restaurant. The restaurant front door is literally to the right of the pit where you see the Exit sign. When you walk in, you walk right beside the 'kitchen' where the open fire pit is located.

The restaurant staff saw me taking a hundred pictures of the firepit and invited me into the cooking area to get a better shot. Then they set me up for a picture. Here I am behind the firepit, holding a bbq sauce brush. Don't miss all the brisket lined against the far edge - the pit was loaded with meat!

Unfortunately, I did not get a good picture of my combo plate of 3 meats: brisket, sausage, & turkey. However, I can honestly say it was the best Texas BBQ meat I've ever had. Adam Richmond did not steer us wrong. Final Score: Hulls-1, The Salt Lick-0 because we ate everything on our plates and ordered dessert!

Second - Round Rock Donuts. What makes them unique? The yeast-risen doughnut originates from a bread-like dough; its distinct yellow color (from fresh eggs) immediately sets it off from any other doughnut.
Unlike baking powder doughnuts, this yeast doughnut cannot be machine-made; it must be hand-rolled, cut, fried and iced. Round Rock Donuts also uses their own orange glaze recipe which also sets this donut apart from others.

Yep, by the time I took the picture, we had already scarfed down 2 from the half dozen we ordered! The real fun though is one particular item listed on the menu; the Texas Sized donut for $5.99.

The first time we went to Round Rock Donuts, we went through the drive-thru and I asked to see a Texas Size Donut. It's a 2 lb. donut. Of course, I took a picture.

We came back the next day and I then took a picture of the Texas Sized Donut next to the regular donuts for perspective.

Greg's favorite donuts have always been Krispy Kreme's until now. He says the Round Rock glazed donut far surpasses. I have to agree, for different reasons though. I'm not a glazed donut person, the 'cake' donuts are more up my ally and Round Rock Donuts had an Applesauce Cake donut that was out of this world. So the final score: Hulls-1, Round Rock Donuts-0 because we ate every crumb without wasting a bite!

Austin Steam Train

We scheduled a train ride while we were in Austin as a fun activity for Nathan that grandparents and parents alike could also enjoy. Our train was a vintage diesel, Austin & Texas Central No. 442, RSD-15 built in 1960. The only remaining diesel of its type still in operation.

To say that Nathan was excited about this, would pretty much be an understatement. I kept thinking he had to go potty but he was just so excited, he litterally could not sit still. Here is Grandma and Nathan with their train tickets.

We boarded the 2:00pm Buckeye Lake car.

Our car was typical in the 1940s and '50s and originally built for the Nickel Plate and Lackawanna railroads. The seats could turn and face either direction or recline, the seats were quite comfortable and spacious. Nathan's smile in the picture below represents his level of enthusiasm at this point.

There were probably 10 cars connected to the engine and we were able to walk from car to car. The connection between cars created a small space to walk between which was somewhat open to the elements before reaching the next car door.

There was also a concession car with drinks, snacks and souvenirs which was fun.

Nathan was alert and watching out the windows during most of our train ride.

Our train route from Cedar Park to Bertram was about 33 miles one way with a brief layover at the Bertram depot. The depot was originally built in 1912 and fully restored to museum quality in 1998. I could have sat in this little depot for hours just imagining how things operated so long ago.

Just enough time before boarding for a quick family picture. Fun was had by all...but by Nathan the most!

The University of Texas at Austin

Of course we visited The University of Texas while we were in Austin - it's only 4 blocks from the state capital, after all. The old Victorian-Gothic main building serves as the central point of the 40-acre campus.

We stopped at the Co-op for some Longhorn shopping, where they had this photo-op set up for shoppers.

Also just outside the co-op is this painted wall of Austin.

Inside the co-op is a Longhorn fan's heaven. I did not buy these horns but Greg did buy the Texas flag with the Longhorn in the blue, seen here.

The boys also went to a baseball game, UT-4, OU-3. David was originally wearing a maroon shirt, Greg made him change and fortunately, David packed a less offensive shirt. :)

The State Capital of Texas

While in Austin, we made it a priority to do a few important things during our brief stay. One of those was to visit the state capital. Perhaps, your wondering why would we want to visit the state capital?

I remember moving to Arizona and making a fuss when I finally saw Arizona's state capital. Arizona natives didn't understand what my fuss was about, so I'm taking this opportunity to illustrate.

In Texas - it's big. It's also beautiful and very impressive but the real reason we went to the state capital was for Nathan. We've been teaching him the states and after studying the map one day, he asked "What's the stars?". We explained the star is the capital for each state, a very hard concept to explain. I thought it might help if he physically saw the capital though I'm not sure if he really understands at four years of age. That's the real reason we visited. Without further ado some more pictures from the Texas State Capital.

Completed in 1888, it is recognized as one of the nation's most distinguished state capitals. It also holds a position in the National Register of Historic Places and is also designated a National Historic Landmark for its "significant contribution to American history."

The dome section of the building is the most impressive, this is looking down at the floor from the fourth level.

This is looking up at the ceiling from ground level.

Greg, on the fourth floor, took this picture of Nathan and me on the 3rd floor, just across the opening. Though it's hard to see us, Nathan and I are in the smack center of this picture.

There are painted portraits hanging everywhere of former officers of the state, Nathan is looking at Davy Crockett, who fought in the Texas Revolution and died at the Alamo.

The front lawn and grounds of the capital are meticulously maintained and quite beautiful. Here is Greg and Nathan as we leave.

Texas Hill Country Wedding

Greg's cousin, Alyssa just got married in Austin, Texas. It was a beautiful Texas Hill Country wedding. Most of Greg's family traveled to Austin for the wedding, so naturally it was a good old time!

Allyssa, after the ceremony with Grandaddy and Nana, who is 83 years old. Grandad drove them all the way from Dallas to Austin so he could officiate the wedding. If I'm not mistaken, he has now married all the grandkids (us included) with the exception of one cousin (Alyssa's brother) who has not yet married.

I actually remembered to get a family picture this time - not so hard with this side of the family, where EVERYONE has a camera - we look like the paparazzi!

After 5 weeks, our first T-ball season has come to a close - the takeaways for each of us:

Greg: Learned that 4 yr old kids really do have a painfully short attention span.
Julia: Learned what items to bring to the field on game day - mainly a chair.
Nathan: Learned how to act around misbehaved kids whose parents sit idly by while their children terrorize other kids.

Life or Something Like It

Right now, I'm reading this book which has seared my conscious. I'm having a hard time blogging lately because I can't reconcile between the things that make up my daily life and the self reflection this book induces.

Yet, here I go because I know that this collection of pictures and stories is an important connection for those who love us...

We went to the local Roots and Boots Rodeo which had a petting zoo. Nathan likes Goats. Nathan does not like chickens, bunnies, ducks, ponies or cows. Just goats.

The price of gas these days is a bit high.

We also hung out at an empty farm park where we snuck on the train.

Spring Break came to an end, back to school,Nathan pictured here at the end of his class line.

Greg started installing tile in our house. I'm happy about this.

Arboretum & Aviation, All in A Day

A few weekends ago was one of those perfect mid 80's weekends complete with outdoor activities to boot.

Boyce Thompson Arboretum - More than I anticipated, can't wait to go back!

I also love the new point and shoot Greg got me for Christmas, it takes awesome pictures like this one of a butterfly.

Gateway Aviation Day - a local event (for free!) that was quite spectactular.

This Harrier was in Afganistan just 6 months ago. The painted missiles & gunsights just under the Captin's name indicates how many missiles were deployed and times the guns were used. (Borrowing Greg's Facebook captions cause he actually retains this type of information).

A Day Out with Thomas

This past weekend was the 16th consecutive year for Thomas the Tank Engine to tour. The tour stopped in 45 cities across the United States and Canada. We were so fortunate that Thomas chugged into Globe, AZ - just about an hour away.

From the moment we arrived, Nathan was beside-himself-dancing-in-line-slap-happy. It was 3 hours of unabridged train phenomena and Nathan couldn't have enjoyed anything more.

We met the train engineer.

We rode an old double decker train (that Thomas was pulling - wink, wink).

We got a 'Jr Engineer Certificate' during the train ride.

We met Sir Topham Hat also known as The Fat Controller.

We played with Thomas train sets.

But the very best part of the day was seeing Thomas the Tank Engine up close!

It was the best day EVER for this little 4 year old!!!

(sidebar - we've been experimenting with Nathan's hair to work with his cowlicks, hahaha!)

Mighty Machines Birthday Party

We celebrated Nathan's 4th birthday a few weeks ago and our theme was taken from a Canadian show, Might Machines, which Nathan loves more than any other show right now. Since Mighty Machines isn't a common boy's birthday theme, I had to think creatively.

Stuck to a color theme tied to the Mighty Machines logo; blue, yellow, black. Made pinwheels, a birthday banner and custom gift bags for our birthday guests.

The custom gift bags highlighted the backyard activities.

Each station in the backyard was related to a different Mighty Machines show.

"In the Harbor" - Make your own Soap Sailboat craft. Case did a great job making his!

"At the Garbage Dump" - Kids used and kept 'garbage grabbers' to pick up trash. A big hit!

'At the Construction Site' - Kids used wrapped boxes to build towers.

I ordered yellow construction hats for the kids to wear and take home for this activity but

they didn't arrive in time (dang snowstorms!).

'At the Fire Station' - Stick the hat on the firehouse dog.

'At the Train Yard' - Kids were able to ride the train. (repurposed from last years party, haha!)

Kept the cake simple, a number '4' and used cookie cutters/fondant for the Mighty Machines decorations.

Nathan was so cute opening gifts!

Parting favors were machine shaped cookies (firetrucks, planes & cars) that I made,

yet failed to take pictures of when they were all done! DOH!

As the kids left, I meant to give them our party balloons.

Forgot to do that to, so we released them in the backyard and herein lies

my favorite picture of Nathan for the day.

I asked Greg and Josh to release balloons with Nathan and herein lies a

beautiful picture of Greg's sarcasm in it's finest form.

Eating through Texas

For a period in our lives, Greg and I lived on the side of excessive. It's true. For the most part, we've toned it down, a natural occurrence after having children. One area we never reigned in though was in the 'dining out' category. This past holiday, we ate our way through Texas. When we land in Texas, there's an unspoken, invisible banner waving that reads, "Let the Feasting begin!".

We were in Texas for 7 days and these are all the places we ate. You do the math and then let me know...excessive?

Saltgrass Steakhouse-Greg's pick straight from the airport!

Chuys: A solid, good Tex-Mex restaurant.

Korean restaurants are abundant in Dallas, so I usually hit up a Korean place while in Texas.

My lunch, Kimchee soup, not for the faint of heart! You must like spicy-make your nose run & eyes water-kind of hot!

The typical side dishes that accompany every Korean meal. OMgosh, I love these so much!

Some have heard me say, I'm not a fan of American prepared fish, I only like Korean prepared fish, here it is.

Burger House: My favorite Hamburger/Fries combo evah! They make a special seasoning that is sprinkled on the burgers and fries and it's ingredients are top secret and so yum-yum.

Alfonso's: It's all about the Garlic Rolls. The bread is a thick, hearty dough, then smothered in butter and garlic. Brush twice or you'll still taste garlic the day after!

Sonny Bryans: It's BBQ. GOOD BBQ.

My favorite sausage is Sonny Bryans because of it's smokey, peppery taste. The only sausage better than this hails from Elgin, Texas - a bit of a drive from Dallas.

Whatburger: The equivalent to McDonald's in other areas. Whataburgers are everywhere in Texas. If you ever get a chance, I plead with you, just try a Whataburger Taquito.

Hot and Creamy Donuts: Worst donut store name ever but good donuts and coffee!

Razzoo's: Cajun. Greg and I both order Chicken Tchoupitoula (pronounced chopa-2-la) every time. Chicken breast over smoked ham with mushrooms & taters, served with a special butter sauce (the best part!).

Mogio's Gourmet Pizza: Again, we always get the same. The Italian Classic; pesto, chicken, basil, tomatoes, garlic & mozzarella. Hawaiian Sunrise; Canadian bacon, pineapple, cashews, cranberries, mozzrella & cheddar.

Dickey's: My favorite chopped beef brisket sandwich and fried okra!

Most BBQ places in TX, chop the brisket and prepare your sandwich while you watch.

Boston Market: Homecooked fast food. The only place Greg and I will actually eat creamed spinach.

El Norte: Tex-Mex. I ate here for lunch at least once a week for 2 years and never burned out. It's my very favorite chips/salsa, cheese enchilada, taco, rice....ok, it's my favorite mexican food.

Potbelly: The special sandwich place, we didn't get to eat at...awww man!!

Sooo....excessive? :o)

It's not Where or What about Christmas...it's Who!

It's not 'Where' we spend Christmas, though we travel to Texas every year.

It's not 'What' we anticipate getting from under the tree - that's the furthest thing on our minds.

It's the 'Who' we spend Christmas with that matters so much more than anything else.

For me, the moment I walk through Grandad's and Nana's door, it's Christmas. The decorations are out, the kitchen is bustling with activity and the house is full of people chattering. It's what Christmas should be like in my minds eye.

The moment I enter their house, my heart is warmed just by the sight of their Living Room, which is filled with Christmas decorations welcoming anyone who walks in.

The tree is in it's place and hanging all around are red apples marked with the names of every single person in the family.

The table in the Dining Room is set and it looks like we are expecting royalty to join us for lunch. There's no paper or plastic cutlery here, it's first class all the way - even on the kid's table!

In the busy Kitchen, I can expect to hear Grandad commanding attention for each dish's preparation and I typically find Nana cooking.

I can't help but smile whenever I walk in the den because dozens of pictures hang from each wall as if to tout loudly the owners pride & joy is in every family member, kid & grandkid.

Before I know it, it's time to eat and then...we are having the most sacred, most holy meal ever. Take a look...

After we eat, it's time to open gifts and Grandad is always right in the thick of it because in reality, he's just a 63 year old kid. I marvel at how many times I've seen him just like in this picture below -down on the floor playing with the young kids.

The final part of the day is my favoirte. We just spend time together. We catch up, we tell stories, we laugh. This time is like gold to me -there's nothing better than this time. This next picture totally captures the fun. Greg's cousin said something that made me laugh just as the picture was taken. I love it.

We take our share of pictures. I love that the females in this family are just as willing to pose and take pictures as much I am!

Grandad and Nana are getting up in their years. Perhaps, that is why each Christmas feels more special than the last because I'm not sure how many more years they will be able to pull out decorations, set up tables, cook up a storm and wash a ton of dishes. All I know is that Greg's Grandparents and their house IS Christmas to me. What a blessing the last 14 Christmas' have been for me because of Grandad and Nana!

Grandad and Nana - Thank you for hosting Christmas year after year. Thank you for going the extra mile to make Christmas special, for losing the hours of sleep to prepare, for doing more than your poor muscles can handle, for standing on your feet to cook and cook and cook, for making a sacrifice just to buy a gift...you do so much to make Christmas special for your family and I really appreciate it and love you both so much for it. Part 2A: We eat...like professionals. The adults...

and children alike...

After dinner, we hang out...

We catch up and visit with each other...

We take advantage of photo ops with our kids...

We invariably try to get family pictures...

After a few hours, we pack our kids and work in our last snippets of conversation as we say goodbye...

And that's what we do every year at Christmas Eve - great memories, every time!

Christmas Festivities so far:

1. Kids Christmas program at church - Nathan performed in both services, no on-stage emotional breakdowns this year, whew!

2. Christmas lights - Greg went a little overboard this year.

Just kidding! That's not our house! We went looking at Christmas lights, snapped a quick pic of Nathan standing in front of all this hubaloo. Cute.

3. School Christmas Parties - Cute broccoli tree. I didn't have time to make this but I would like the name and number of the mom who did have the time and since she has oodles of time to make decorative food trees, perhaps she can help me with a few things I still have on my plate! By the way, I was the mom that brought two bags of chocolate candy. You got it, it's the 'New Me'!

4. Christmas letters - got these out the door this week.

5.Dinner with friends - Gotta make time for friends. Relationships is what Christmas should really be about. This beautiful table setting by our friends Michael and Becky, the dinner tasted as good as the table looked!

6. School Christmas Pageant - TOO CUTE and definitely worth the time.

Chelsea's Kitchen : Kelsey's Heart

Remember this couple? Jim Bob and Kelsey. Time and time again, this young couple impresses me - and they did it again. Kelsey called and explained that in lieu of exchanging Christmas gifts this year, she and Jim Bob wanted to treat us to a nice dinner.

"Get a babysitter & dress up." Kelsey said.

So we did and we had the most fantastic time. They took us to Chelsea's Kitchen in Phoenix and this review excerpt nails this place down:

With its hip, Pacific Northwest-chic interior and a patio that feels more like a secret garden, Chelsea's Kitchen can easily make you forget you're dining in the desert. This casually sophisticated establishment insists on the freshest ingredients (especially fish), used with equally fresh and flavorful ideas that complement the restaurant's cool but comfortable style.

This place was cool - much like our hosts. :o) And the food? Well the food was ah-mazing!! Seriously.

So the restaurant was chic & cool. The dining was fine & fabulous - but it was the company that made this night remarkable. The night was really about spending focused quality time with those who are special.

(Pardon me while I step on my soapbox.) This young couple gave us the gift of their time and there really couldn't be a more perfect gift than that. Now, they did pick up the tab, which was undoubtedly hefty but their intention was to share a special place, a good meal and quality time together and I think that's what Christmas should be about. Adults, can we fore go the frenzied gift buying for the sake of buying/giving and just spend focused quality time together? Seriously. (Stepping off the soapbox now.)

The sweet memories from our dinner together will linger in my mind for years to come. From the conversation we had, to the stories we told and the laughs we shared, this will be a special night I'll always remember. Besides, I won't forget because we took pictures - that's just who we are - haha!

Nathan is on Becky Higgins Blog!

I'm a big fan of Becky Higgins, I've talked about her before. A few years ago, I met her, got her autograph and have continued to follow her career as organizational/creative/homemaking goddess/diva. That was my personal description for her - she would be to humble to describe herself that way, hahaha!

She often creates photo challenges and picks a favorite out of all the submissions to give away her amazing "Project Life" kit. (Anybody, this is a GREAT Christmas gift!) Becky recently had a photo challenge to get reflections in your photos. I submitted the picture of Nathan in Vail, looking out the gondola. In the end, my picture didn't win the Project Life Kit but I was thrilled to see she picked my picture as one of her favorites!

It validats this is as sweet a picture as I thought it was and ALOT of people just saw my picture of my Nathan. Becky's online audience is HUGE, unless you've been following her for the last 15 years, like I have, then you have no idea how far reaching this woman's influence is, it's faaaar. So that made me happy today.

Participating in Parade Day!

We were in our town's Christmas parade today. There was much buildup to this event in the Hull homestead. I explained to Nathan we were going to be IN a parade and kids from his school were dressing up as bible characters, he said he wanted to dress up as a Philistine Warrior. How was I to explain that was on the wrong team? Well, someone has to be the bad guy, I guess. Philistine Warrior it was. I outfitted Nathan's wagon and off we went to be in the parade.

We walked behind his schools float/trailer which portrayed the three wise men and various stages of Jesus' life.

It was another great community event and it seemed like everyone was either participating or watching street side.

As with all our community events there was a huge turnout, tons of vendor booths and activities for all ages.

For Nathan, there was this free train ride provided by a local who lives in the community. He didn't get paid by the town to provide this, he just brought it out and provided free rides because it's Christmas - wow, that's Christmas spirit! It goes without saying, Nathan was thrilled.

For me and appealing to my love for vintage, was this 1928 Ford Model A decked out for the holidays. The owner offered to let me sit in it and then took this picture! This car is soooo me! :o)

And I guess the town brought some snow in, I saw a few patches here and there of snow, kinda funny.

It was a fun event, we'll look forward to doing it again next year!

Less Than Perfect and it's Okay.

On Black Friday, I bought one of those snazzy looking gingerbread kits. The train one. On Sunday, after church, Nathan and I worked on our project. Nathan; excited and eager. Me; unsure, bouncing back and forth between crappy instructions and the picture on the box.

This was not an easy project, it was actually very hard and I was trying to instruct a 3 yr old through it. We finished our project and needless to say it didn't look anything like the sweet picture on the box. It was less than perfect. It was messy. It was full of flaws - if you compared it to the picture.

But I wasn't comparing it to the picture because our project was never really about making a cute gingerbread choo-choo train. It was about Nathan and I working together and spending time with one another. So if you come over and you see our messy gingerbread choo-choo, don't laugh. It was a labor of love - literally. :o)

Thanksgiving Week: Pumpkin Chiffon

The last 2 months of the year, I am making this recipe at least once a week at the request of my husband who finds a way to work it into every conversation we have. Here's some real-life examples that I kept track of this month:

Greg: I have a surprise for you
Julia: What is it?
Greg: Now if I give this to you now, you have to make a pumpkin chiffon for me today, ok?

another example:

Me: I want something to snack on.
Greg: Like Pumpkin Chiffon? Hmm?

last example:

Greg: I've had a headache since this morning.
Julia: Did you take any Excederin?
Greg: No, but I think Pumpkin Chiffon would help it go away.

Since I've made 3 Pumpkin Chiffons already this month, I am sharing the recipe so that maybe someone else can share in my misery. Happy Hullidays!

Pumpkin Chiffon

1 3/4 cups graham cracker crumbs

1/4 cup sugar

1/2 cup butter, melted

1 (8 oz.) package cream cheese, softened

2 eggs, beaten

3/4 cup sugar

2 (3 3/4 oz.) package vanilla instant pudding mix

3/4 cup milk

2 cups cooked, mashed pumpkin

dash of ground cinnamon

1 (8 oz) carton whipped topping, thawed and divided

1/2 cup chopped pecans

1. Combine first 3 ingredients; press into a 12 x 9 x 2 inch baking dish. Set aside.

2. Combine cream cheese, eggs, and 3/4 cup sugar; beat until fluffy. Spread over crust. Bake at 350 for 20 mins; set aside to cool.

3. Combine pudding mix and milk; beat 2 minutes at medium speed. Add pumpkin and cinnamon; mix well. Stir in 1 cup whipped topping.

4. Spread pudding mixture over cream cheese layer. Spread remaining whipped topping over pudding layer. Sprinkle top with pecans. Store in refrigerator.

A Lady Celebrates Eighty!

I love to address this lady by her full title of "Grandma Mary Edith Esau" and a week ago, she celebrated her 80th birthday with her entire family and a good number of friends. We were so honored to attend and join the celebration. We all watched a touching video presentation, sang a few hymns, ate some cake and visited with friends we had not seen in years, it was a really special time.

If I had to describe this lady in a single word, it would be 'Spry', the definition being "active and brisk". She totally fits the bill; she regularly exercises (something I can't seem to manage), she is rarely sick, she's at every family function, she's active in her church, active in her community and she still travels all over the country visiting her kids and grandkids. Get this, she recently complained that her computer was...too slow! So her family pitched in and got her a new computer for her birthday.

She also has a quick wit and the best sense of humor. At the time this picture was taken she said "Make me look good, ok?". She totally cracks me up and I don't think she needs any help looking good - she's beautiful as is!

Even though, she had all of her fraternal grandkids around, she had time to hug and pose with her foster grandkid, which really touched my heart.

During the birthday celebration, Nathan got to hang out with his new friend, Evan. It was the best day ever...until he was running and then fell down..and then scraped his knees...and then screamed bloody murder for an excruciatingly looong time...and then we had to leave from painful embarrassment...but that's ok, it was the end of the party and we needed to scoot out anyway.

One last picture, captioned, "Really?" As in, am I really making that goofy face and letting someone take a picture? What a dork-wad. Nice picture of Nathan, though.

Friends Before We Met

So often technology can be so frustrating when it doesn't work as it should. Like when my phone won't sync up with Outlook. Or when I can't access programs recorded on the DVR. However, sometimes, technology has it's redeeming qualities.

Case in point. Lori and I have been friends for close to a year. We've exchanged information about photography, software, parenting, etc. We have encouraged one another in our successes and sympathized in our failures. We have laughed at each other's most scatterbrain moments. But we had never met face to face until recently. We became friends online by following each others lives through our blogs and Facebook.

(I forget how short I am, then a picture reminds me)

We finally met face to face last weekend. Lori and her family stayed with us while in town for a family reunion and the short time we were able to spend with them was precious. There were many highlights, like getting to know her family and and liking them too. hahaha!!

Another bonus was Nathan's immediate friendship with their little boy, Evan. They played and played but my favorite part was hearing them wake up in the mornings and whispering conspiratorially in the dark while the rest of the house slept. SO CUTE!

Both boys are train lovers, so how could they NOT be instant friends, right?

Okay, how cute is this picture of these toddlers gathered around a laptop?! Baby Geeks. Hahaha!!

I have to sneak this in. If you heard Dan speak you'd swear Peter Gibbons from 'Office Space' was talking. Dan sounds just like him and maybe it's just me but I think he sorda looks like Ron Livingston to. We really enjoyed getting to know Dan, he has a knack for providing funny quips at just the right moment, so funny.

Our friends left on Monday and it was sad to see them go and the sentiment was shared. Nathan made this craft at school the same day. It reads, "Nathan is thankful for:" and the first feather says "Evan". Seriously.

"Until They All Come Home"

"Until They All Come Home" was the theme for this year's Freedom Ride for FCA. It was a beautiful day, the weather was perfect and a good sense of patriotism was in the air.

I was at the registration table as a volunteer bright and early (6:30am).

A biscuits and gravy breakfast was served between 7-8.

The Luke Air Force Base Honor Guard was present.

Much to my inconvenience, Nathan vehemently stated that he wanted to dress up as a police officer for Halloween. And much to my dismay, he didn't forget what he wanted to dress up as. I don't know where this desire came from but I didn't question it simply because I was glad he didn't want to be Batman.

Well, this week my friend, Cori, invited us to her church's Trunk or Treat event but I had yet to buy Nathan's costume so I had to scramble the day of, typical of the new Me. But remember the old Me? When I used to have it all together? Ok-maybe you don't, but I do! Obviously, I found the costume in time and we were able to go have fun with friends. Pictures from our night:

In addition to Trunk or Treat, there was a great feast of chili & cornbread, my absolute favorite. Regrettably, we had dinner with Greg before we left, probably good though because I could have made a total pig of myself with all this scrumptious smelling chili! I had a small bowl of white chili, which was superb so now I gotta figure out how to make it.

There were also fun games, here is Nathan 'bowling' for a spider ring. Really cute idea, here.

All Nathan really cared about though, was getting his grubby fingers on some cupcakes, so he walked on the cakewalk twice.

As we all talked about costumes, my friend Layne stated her kids "...don't get a choice...", she explained that she bought her kids costumes on clearance last year for a total of $6! And they were GREAT costumes. Can I do the same? Can I just make Nathan wear what I buy and not give him a choice? Why do I feel so bad for that? I wish I had taken a picture of Layne with her girls but I only caught this one of her handing out candy from her trunk.

Nathan and I need to talk about why he no longer smiles for pictures. I wonder if Greg is poisoning his mind.

Wednesday was crazy hair day at Nathan's school. Nathan's crazy hair was totally Flock of Seagulls. The real highlight though was a teacher who made her hair a Christmas Tree! Seriously, how FUN is that?!

Picture of the Day: To Do Lists...Inevitable but not Impossible

Upon returning to work this week, I had to start, yet another, work related to-do list. I was getting buried in a mountain of tasks, this is the list I had to start to keep track. I highlight the items I've completed. I mention it because I know that seems odd to people. I picked this up from Jim Myers, my boss at the Fairmont Hotel in the early 90's. He would highlight what he could mark off his list. For some reason, it stuck with me. Weird to think I've been doing this for almost 20 years. Even stranger, that I remember specifically who I adopted this habit from. More puzzling that that is the fact I've been able to use the words: odd, weird, strange and puzzling, all in one post! hahaha! All right, back to work for me...

These flowers were anonymously left at my house. I have a feeling they were left by a friend of mine who blesses my life in so many ways. When I overstate how grateful I am for something she's done, she just says "That's what friends do.", expecting nothing in return. I've learned so much from her and I'm so thankful for her friendship in my life.

Hey Friend, thank you for everything and for these flowers. Love you, mean it!
